It is diagnosed when an artist stops enjoying doing his or her art, because it isn't just for fun any longer. Other syptoms include: sleeping a lot, bad eating habits, disorganization.
Although it is a challenge, one can overcome LAS. The first step to recovery is to get the kind of clients who hound their artist till they are holding the commissioned peice in hand. This usually forces a sense of artificial drive onto the artist. Since the artist will lack the internal source of tension that motivates others to complete tasks quickly, the external source (nagging) helps compinsate.
Another good motivator is having to choose between eating raman for the 437th meal in a row or starving. This helps bring to the forefront of the artist's thoughts what the consequences of his or her laziness are. Many times this natural mental defense is foiled by the fact that the artist is content to live off of raman.
